Field Officer’s Mess Kit | Exploring SMALL TOWN Canada at War

This mess kit belonged to Major George Cassidy of the Algonquin Regiment. The Algonquin Regiment is a Northern Ontario regiment that was originally the 97th Regiment; at the outbreak of WWI it became the 159th Battalion. In February of 1917, the 159th Battalion was broken up and its ranks used to reinforce other units fighting in France. After the war, the battalion was reorganized and combined with the 228th and 256th under the name of the Algonquin Rifles. Later this was changed to the Algonquin Regiment.
In WWII, the Algonquin Regiment sailed for Britain on the Empress of Scotland in 1943. The Regiment landed at Normandy in July of 1944, and fought its way up through the Falaise Gap and then through Belgium and Holland as part of the push for the Liberation of the Netherlands. The Algonquin Regiment now serves as a reserve brigade in the Canadian Forces.
